What Are Data Stacks?

A data stack is a term from the programming world, and it refers to a “stack” or collection of informational elements. These elements can include media, commands and algorithms. All of the information in the stack serves a specific function within an application or piece of hardware. These data structures function just like a deck of cards — IT professionals can add or remove cards from the stack as necessary. This means data stacks offer easy, organized data filing.

Using Data Stacks

The purpose of a data structure like a stack is to compile, organize and discard information in an easy and orderly fashion. Data stacks operate in both hardware and software, though they serve different purposes for each. Hardware uses data structures for general operations such as printing — data stacks organize user commands. For example, you simply click a few buttons to print a document. Behind the scenes, however, the data structure is recording each command and making sure the document prints just as it appears on the screen.

Data structures in software guide the user; the user will only see relevant steps and processes. Behind the scenes, data structure analyzes and provides information based on the user’s commands. For example, if you are playing a game on your phone, you can only advance to the next level after completing the previous one. Even though all the levels are present in the data stack, you, as the user, can only see the one you are currently playing.

Organizing the Data

A data stack resides in a designated area of the computer’s memory. There are usually several in any operational environment, and each has a specific function. Information “stacks” together, organized according to relevance. For instance, data stacks are responsible for the organization in your computer: your applications, your documents. The list of “recent documents” that appears in your application window relies on a data stack for information.

How Data Stacks Work in Business

Business managers need to understand the technical processes of the IT department. These processes include hardware and software operations, the internet, and of course, data stacks, as they are an integral part of the IT department’s work.
